Hope you have a good summer!
Some recent local wins at the city council:
Us Greens send out note about re-zoning the old high school lot (Hyvinkään yhteiskoulu) in Uudenmaankatu, central Hyvinkää. Partially because of our reminder, city did change the positioning of the new building in a lot, in order to preserve old treeline at the street. Old trees form luscious, boulevard-style street line, to and from downtown alongside Uudenmaankatu. Example of bad design choices are seen right next door or this lot – where new residential buildings are build way too close to existing streetline, and therefore decades old trees were cut, and new ones aren’t planted. Change might not be that big, in this case, 2,5 meters. But It will save the trees and what’s left of the old style in the block.
Another green victory, was achieved when green representatives:
The new school with daycare unit is going to be built at Hangonsilta, near downtown. We were able to argue and persuade to build “big enough” gym/hall to hold all the students at once. Slightly cheaper option was presented from the city officials multiple times, but our representatives at the city exec. Board, board of education, and in the board of technical services made and passed the vote for bigger hall. Final vote took place in the city council meeting, and it’s now official: the bigger hall is going to get build. Our argument was that smaller students and daycare children need safe and good spaces in their own building – also we can’t be sure about the weather during changing climate. Outdoor sports and playing may not be possible when extreme heat waves – or exceptionally cold periods, or heavy rain/snowfall.
